In 2021, a total of 291 independent movies were released in theaters across the United States and Canada, a slight increase in comparison to the previous year. Independent movie production was deeply impacted by the pandemic, decreasing from 863 movies produced in 2019 to 278 the following year, while the number of released studio movies dropped by more than half over that same period of time.
